Yuri Gagarin was born March 9th 1934.
He educated as a military pilot
and was selected as a cosmonaut in March 1960.
On-board Vostok 1, major Yuri
Gagarin became the first human in space
and the first to orbit Earth.
He was launched April 12th 1961, 06:07 GMT
from the Baikonur, Tyuratam launch site
and parachuted to landing 108 minutes later at 07:55 GMT
near the village Smelovka, 26 km SW of Engels in Saratov region.
Yuri Gagarin was selected as back-up commander
for Soyus 1 in 1967,
but was killed in an air crash March 27th 1968.
